Using Mind Mapping Software to Organize Your Book Club

By Article Guy On February 20, 2010 Under Uncategorized

Book clubs are a fun way to socialize with others and enjoy some great reading in the process. However, despite being fun, book clubs do require organization and planning to run successfully. For each meeting, the location of the meeting and what book everyone is to read needs to be selected and communicated to the other club members in a timely manner. Administrative details such as contact information in case of meeting changes or cancellations must also be considered. Mind Mapping software tools can help book club organizers ensure their club runs smoothly. With Mind Maps, club organizers can “map out” everything from meeting times and locations to member suggestions for future reading in one, spatially formatted diagram. Moreover, organizers can construct their map using graphics and other associative visuals to make the map easier to conceptualize. Book club organizers can, therefore, use Mind Maps to effectively and efficiently manage a successful book club.

What is Mind Mapping Software?

Mind Mapping software is any software that is used to create diagrams, pictures, and other graphic visuals in order to show the relationship between ideas or other types of information.1 With Mind Maps, the key concept or main idea of the information being presented is represented by a central image, located in the center of the map. Any themes surrounding the main idea are shown on “branches” that are attached to the central image, with subsequent themes of less importance attached by “child branches” or “twigs”. The resulting diagram is a “map” of the ideas and information shown in a spatial, rather than linear, format. Moreover, along with the ideas shown on the map are visual graphics, images, and colors that the constructor of the “map” associates with each of the themes and ideas. Mapping out information in this manner is widely believed to allow the brain to process the information in way that is much more consistent with its natural functioning.

Using Mind Mapping to Manage a Book Club

Suppose you’ve decided to start a book club in your neighborhood for people who enjoy reading as much as you do. 10 of your neighbors have agreed to join your club, and now you must organize the first meeting. Deciding to use a Mind Map, you begin organizing the first meeting by placing a graphic representing the book club in the map’s center. You next list all the main components necessary for organizing each meeting, such as book selection and meeting location, on “branches” attached to the central graphic. On attached “child branches”, you then list everything you will need to successfully manage each component. Throughout your map, you make sure to use graphics and visuals to make the map more associative and easy for you to remember. When you have completed your map, it might look similar to the attached Mind Map diagram.

Running a Successful Book Club Using the Mind Map

With your Mind Map done, you are now ready to put your plan for the first meeting into motion. First, you email everyone in the club informing them of the meeting date and time and asking them for book suggestions. As the email responses come in, you are able to note book suggestions and any conflicts with the meeting time on your map. Since everything you need for your book club is contained in the Map, updating meeting information is easy. You now find that you are also able to keep track of member feedback very efficiently, since you are noting all their responses on one diagram, rather than in several places. Had you simply listed out everything you needed for your book club on paper utilizing a linear list format, managing the logistics of the meeting would have been much more difficult. Moreover, the visual stimuli you used for your map makes managing book club information incredibly intuitive and easy to remember. With Mind Mapping software as your organizational tool, planning and managing your first book club meeting is a breeze, leaving you more time to enjoy your reading.
