Choosing the Perfect Surgeon for Your LASIK
If you choose to get LASIK surgery done on your eyes, you’ll first want to find a qualified doctor. The things you need to consider as you make your choice include the surgeon’s qualifications, experience, personality, equipment he uses, and his reputation. Most important, of course, are the surgeon’s experience and qualifications. After all, the doctor will have either a positive or negative effect on your vision for as long as you live.
The majority of LASIK surgeons perform their craft flawlessly. Nevertheless, as with all professions, there are a few who are not so good. Therefore, it’s important to thoroughly investigate any doctor whom you’re considering hiring for this procedure.
Research, first of all, the doctor’s reputation. When a LASIK surgeon has membership in several reputable professional organizations, this indicates a certain amount of commitment to his profession. Be sure, however, that this association is relevant to his field of practice. Membership only matters if it pertains to LASIK and / or some related ophalmic procedures.
Once you’ve researched the surgeon’s associations, see if you can find out the views of some of his previous patients. Their views should not be the only determining factor, but they do help you compile a complete portrait of the surgeon.
In addition, find out when the surgeon first started in this field and how many procedures he has done. Every doctor has his “first patient” (scary as that might be)…but that doesn’t mean you have to be that first patient.
But don’t stop at researching the doctor; rather, research the medical center where he works, as well. How much do you trust the equipment that the doctor uses? But this information really only helps you if you also investigate the LASIK equipment being used and can decide which has the best reputation. Generally this will mean employing the latest available technology. Try the internet or a medical journal with looking for information on lasik surgery cost or lasik surgery.
And finally, as you decide which surgeon to hire, don’t ignore your own intuition. Be sure to set up a time to meet with the surgeon in person. And if you decide during this face-to-face meeting that there’s something about the doctor you don’t trust, then feel free to find someone else for the surgery. Human intuition is, astonishingly, often quite accurate. And even if your intuition wasn’t quite in tune with the facts, it’s still better to work with a doctor that you have full confidence in. And this means you should always work only with doctors in whom you have complete trust.
