Is Your Home Toddler Safe?
Whether you’re a parent or not, if you ever expect to have little ones visiting your home, you’ll be glad you apply these tips! – to keep them from getting hurt. Whether you’re a new parent or grandparent, or if you’re expecting guests who have children, view your living room critically with a little tyke’s eye. Do what you need to make it childproof – this is the case whether you live in Colorado, or anywhere else in the country!
Not long after they start to roll, they’ll be crawling & walking soon after. Crusing is when they’re not quite walking yet, but are able to get around by using couches & coffee tables as a crutch.
Put yourself in a child’s shoes… How do you see your room from their perspective? Get down to the same height as a child! Don’t just look from a grown-up’s perspective – get down on all fours and look around from their perspective. Oh my – isn’t that sparkly shiny thing a fun looking thing to play with! What’s inside those little holes in the wall where the wires go?
Now, you’ve got to move the fragile figurines & glass dishes handed down from your grandmother. Be sure to move household plants that might be poisonous. Toddlers are sure to put those bright-colored flowers or leaves in their mouths. Don’t forget about low reaching shelves. They’re sure to be grabbed at by a curious toddler.
Protect all electrical outlets with outlet covers. It’s time to put the electrical cords in some form of child-safe conduit. Prior to securing the cords, make sure they don’t show bare wires. Be sure your window blind and curtain cords are wrapped up high and out of reach.
If you have coffee tables with sharp corners, try to have some temporary padding to stick on those corners. If so, be sure to use corner guards. Avoid having glass topped tables where they might be playing.
How can they get out, if they wanted to get out? Be prepared for your little one to venture outdoors if the front door is unlocked. And the little angel will certainly attempt escape through other doorways. Buy baby gates to keep them contained.
If they eat dirt or dust, don’t sweat it! It’s part of their adjustment to the world around them. Don’t hesitate to correct them gently if the parent doesn’t when they reach for unsafe items like electrical outlets. Apparently, it’s not time for a new hairstyle.
