Quilting is Easy for Beginners
Quilting is a sewing method done to join two or more layers of material together to make a thicker padded material. Quilting can be done on a variety of textile products including wall hangings, clothing and bed spreads. Dense quilting is where you make one area stand out over the others with added fabric or batting. Quilting can be done with a specilist long arm quilting system or by hand. Quilting originated for its utility, producing a thicker padded fabric either for warmth or for protection. Additionally, there are ancient Egyptian sculptures showing figures which appear to be wearing clothing which is quilted, possibly for warmth in the chilly desert evenings.
A quilter is the name given to someone who works at quilting. Typical quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. During American pioneer days “paper” quilting became popular. Machine quilting and hand quilting are the two most widely used methods. Hand quilting uses a needle and thread to sew your stiches by hand across the entire quilt top. A quilting frame or hoop is used to assist the quilter in holding the piece together. Hand quilting is still practiced by the Amish within the United States, and is enjoying resurgence worldwide. Before quilting, the sewing machine can put the layers together. Quilters can use threads that contrast the fabric to emphasize the design patterns of the quilt.
Sew the three layers of fabric together using stitches in decorative patters or straight lines. Stitching through three layers, usually by hand has three purposes; 1) to hold the three layers together, 2) to create the design of the quilt, and 3) to trap air which will make the quilt much warmer. Most quilters will start in the middle of the quilt and work outward. Quilting can use decorative stiches in complex designs and patterns. Quilting often combines patchwork, embroidery or applique together.
Quilting is a 6 step process: 1 select the fabric, 2 cut the fabric, 3 sewing the fabric together in a pattern, 4 layering the three pieces together, 5 sewing thru the layers of the quilt, 6 sew the binding to the edges of the quillt.
