Adult Learning Disabilities: How To Treat?

As an educator, you’re aware of the fact that learning disabilities that are not treated in childhood will continue in adulthood. However, there are a number of ways to treat adult learning disabilities that have proven to be effective. Some adults are not even aware that they have a learning disability until they have completed elementary or high school, so it’s up to you as an educator to present your adult students with solutions that will make learning fun and engaging.

One of the first things you’ll need to do is become educated about learning disabilities. Finding about about the comprehension difficulties that many adults face will give you more of a sensitivity to these conditions. The knowledge will also help you to help the adults that are in your class. Some of your students may never have been diagnosed, so you’ll have to watch for symptoms.

When you’re helping individuals with adult learning disabilities, it’s important to figure out exactly what you plan on teaching. Determine the knowledge level of the students that you’ll be teaching, and the skill set that you’ll have to acquire to be an effective educator. For instance, many of your students may need additional assistance preparing for the GED, so that they can become working adults. Your job will be to go over the general questions that will be featured on the test, and to help students feel more at ease with the testing process. If you are working with adult students that have dyslexia, you’ll need to study different methods for teaching reading and comprehension, so that your students will learn how to live with their learning disability without being self-conscious.

It’s also very important to assess the individual learning styles of each of your students. Even if you’re aware of the learning disabilities that students are dealing with in your classroom, you’ll still need to know the best ways for each students to learn. For example, you may have a few students that have dyslexia. However, one student may learn better using flashcards that will allow him to see the word before attempting to sound it out or write it down. Another student may need to hear you say the word a few times before she can translate that into written language. Another student may need tactile learning stimulation to improve reading skills, which can be accomplished by creating a learning model with craft supplies.

You can also help students with adult learning disabilities by relating the principles you teach in class to everyday life. When your students are able to see how the things they’re learning will fit into the family life or work environment, everyone involved in the learning process will be successful.
