Presbyopia And Your Eyes After Forty

By Article Guy On December 9, 2009 Under Medicine

Do you have trouble seeing up close? you may have hyperopia. However, it could also be presbyopia. The truth is they are similar optically but have very different causes. Because they are foundationally different, their treatment options will also vary.

Farsightedness (hyperopia) occurs when light rays that enter the eye do not focus directly on the retina, in fact they would come to focus behind it. This is the result when the physical length of the eye is (from cornea to retina) is too short. Hyperopia can affect people at any age. It is common that young children will actually outgrow this condition. But if they do not, corrective lenses such as contacts of eyeglasses can be used to treat hyperopia. Hyperopes who only require a minimal correction a set of reading glasses can offer better vision. Corrective surgery, such as LASIK, is one available treatment option.

Presbyopia has a similar visual effect in that people have trouble seeing clearly up close, but unlike hyperopia, it is age related. It is the result of the lens inside the eye becoming harder and losing flexibility with age. The result is the same as hyperopia: poor near vision. In general, this is corrected with lenses. reading eyeglasses are often worn to view objects up close. A popular option with contact lenses is called monovision, where one eye is corrected for near vision only and the other eye will have clear distance vision. People who use monovision are forced to adapt to this new way of seeing things up close and at at distance. Contact lenses can also be fit as progressive multifocals, similar to progressive channel eyeglasses.

Hyperopia only effects a smaller portion of the population and there are surgical options to correct it. presbyopia will eventually effect us all, but until very recently was not treated with surgery. When eyes begin to lose flexibility and are no longer to see crisply and clearly close up, it is time for treatment. Though a couple surgical options are available for presbyopia, nothing beats the safe and affordable option of reading glasses. They are completely safe to wear and are very stylish as well. If your clear up-close vision has been lost due to presbyopia, you may as well get some readers that you like.
