The DW Sci-Fi Series & DW Audio Serial: Some History

By Article Guy On November 20, 2009 Under Fun and Entertainment

If you live in one of the mayor English speaking countries it would have been most likely very difficult for you to of not, at the very least, heard of the Sci-Fi legend Doctor Who! With the resurrection of the serial in 2005 following a fifteen yr pause, DW is as popular as ever with shows being transmitted on the international Science fiction channel and even on USA TV channels in addition to the BBC’s broadcasts.

Thanks to the new serial Dr. Who is currently officially the longest running Science fiction serial ever with the 1st episode shown by the BBC on November the 23rd 1963, an episode in which the Doctor & his friends voyaged back 100,000 years into Earth’s past to aid some somewhat dim cavemen so that they could make the discovery of fire.

During the mid 70s the BBC expanded Dr. Who into the audio median producing the first Doctor Who Audio. The first releases were mostly soundtracks from the TV shows with linking narration by the Drs. It wasn’t long before the BBC decided to take the audio releases to the next level by releasing audio book stories only for Audio release.

In addition the DW Audio family was extended with the release of Audiobooks from episodes that had solely appeared on the radio. Also many of the lost shows have been re done by their original Drs in the Audio format making them once more available to the public once again. Now the BBC’s Doctor Who Audiobook collection has over fifty titles all available in quality Digital format at a reduced download price! The collection spans all the way though the 1st Doctor right up until the present Doctor, David Tennant. In addition Torchwood Audio Books & Sarah Jane Audio Books have also been added in recent times.

In today’s world audio is even more popular than ever thanks to MP3 players. With multitasking becoming more and more an important part of our lives it’s not surprising that Audio Book sales for both Doctor Who and in general have increased. Also an important factor about audio titles is that they are very often narrated by their original actors, which really adds to the whole experience.

The way things stand right now it looks like Dr. Who and its spin-off show torchwood and the Sarah Jane adventures are doing really well so things look good for us to be able to enjoy them for some years to come.
