The Best Perfect Pitch Training
Some people think that perfect pitch training is not worth doing because the skill is just something you have to be born with. However, most people, including musical scholars, agree that it is possible to attain perfect pitch as an adult. So, the question is, can it be purposely learned? And how?
There are several common methods in use to try to teach the ability. To begin with, almost all perfect pitch training methods begin with the message, ‘be positive’. It is true that if you keep a positive outlook, you stand a chance of learning. However, if you are excessively skeptical, your pessimism will dominate. Assuming you believe it to be possible to begin with, you can take steps towards learning perfect pitch and the improvement in your ear will encourage you and re-enforce your belief. This happens as the acuity of the ear improves gradually. It should be noted, however, that belief is not enough in itself, you must train. You can read more about this at: perfect pitch software.
The first stage in learning perfect pitch is learning to identify differences between the sounds of different notes, other than their fundamental pitch. The “chroma”, “pitch colors” and “note timbres” are some names given to these qualities. You might find that the training fails to explain much about these “colors” and this can be a bit annoying. In some cases, you will read that you should listen to, for example, a ‘C’ on your instrument with eyes closed. Listen to the ‘C’ very intently and think about how it makes you feel or try to associate a particular image with that sound so that you can make a link in your brain to remember the note. An extremely vague guideline like this is common. It will only be of use to you to do this if you happen to start hearing the real quality of the note, which does distinguish it. You are more likely to just start daydreaming about any random thing.
There are other techniques, which teach you to remember a particular note by associating it with a melody where it is the tonic. It is thought that the note can take on a special meaning as part of a particular melody. You might want to try this method to remember the notes. The argument against this is that, in the context of a melody, the notes are not absolute entities. Are you actually learning absolute pitch if your are memorizing melodies in particular keys? The best approach is to learn about harmonics (also called overtones) and how to listen to them. When listening to individual tones, we tend to concentrate on the fundamental frequency of the sound. The harmonics are the multiple frequency components of the fundamental frequency. The levels of the harmonics of a tonal sound give the sound it’s timbre. The reported difference in quality, or pitch “color” is most likely to come from a perception of difference in the harmonic spectra of the different notes. Developing the acuity of your ear to hear the harmonic range of a note is the way forward for perfect pitch training. For more info, click: what is perfect pitch?
