Becoming a backpacker definately makes one realize how little you really need. With the obvious exception of my cd, I haven’t missed much since I’ve been travelling. It’s a little unsettling to think that all I need to live can be stored in one decent-sized backpack. I was especially shocked to discover that I hadn’t had Burger King for over a month and was still alive. And with only two pairs of shoes and limited clothing options, it’s cool to not have to worry about what to wear each morning.
The backpacker’s nemesis is this: Your life is on your back. Too many bags, and you won’t get too far. Too heavy a bag, and you won’t make it. Therefore, you give yourself a pre determined amount of size and weight, and you stick to it. It’s like physics – if you purchase something, something else of equal or greater size and weight must be farewelled. It certainly makes you think twice about impulse purchases. Personally, I think it’s easier this way – I think I’ll make an experiment of it next time I make a purchase at home. One thing bought, one thing tossed. It would definately cut down on clutter, don’t you agree?

24/7 company is good but can be a bit much at times. I imagine long term travellers must daydream about just one night in a hotel room.Towels never get 100% dry. Damp towels = smelly towels. Smelly towels + dirty tennis shoes = musty smelling clothes. I have learned quickly that backpacking is not a way to impress people with your high sense of fashion. The true (female) backpacker wears no makeup, hair tied haphazardly into a ponytail-ish bun, wrinkled clothes…and a huge smile on her face because she’s more excited about the free food at her hostel than the shopping center down the street. And on to the primary joys of the backpacker life:
Flexibility! Halfway through my travels from Adelaide to Cairns, I decided I wanted to stay a week in Melbourne with a guy I met. So I did. Easy as that. I love it!
I’ve met travellers from all over the world! I’ve had meaningful chats with people from Australia, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Belgium, Spain, England, Wales, Japan, Canada, and the USA. (And those are just the ones I can remember at this late hour.)
While in Cairns, I made new friends every night, even convincing a few of them to join me hanggliding.
While scuba diving in Cairns, I made friends with a Italian who invited me to visit him in Rome. I think I’ll give it a miss, but it was fun to be asked , all the same. I’ll always be able to say that now.
I’ve met friends in one part of the country, only to meet them again somewhere totally different! The guitar advertised for sale probably went long ago and those doilies are the only things left, so a box of them probably will end up in the basement or the attic because everybody knows a garage sale in which nothing was bought is like an African safari in which not even a lonely and forlorn gazelle happened to be spotted. And, truly, hunting for a garage sale is kind of like going out on a safari in many respects.
Maybe one has decided that the spare bedroom that’s now unoccupied because Junior has gone off to college would make the perfect fitness room and the need for a bit of fitness equipment has now arisen. This is so even when an expensive gym membership was purchased just a few months ago and has been used a grand total of one time, right? That high-tech fitness-room-to-be certainly needs some stuff and the garage sale is the place to get it.
In reality, it hardly makes a bit of difference whether or not we really managed to locate anything of any worth at one of these sales. Instead, we’re just like those big game hunters of olden times; we’re out for the biggest game we can find, which in this case means maybe a box of old 1970s-era disco music cassettes that we once danced wildly to in our high school days. It kind of thrills us like getting on a roller coaster used to do.
In the end, adventures in garage sale hunting are in and of themselves a lot of fun. Who cares if we really find anything we like as long as we get out there and scour the neighborhoods like some modern day Treasure Hunt contestant or like a band of pirates desperately following the map to some fabled buried treasure?
