A Guide To Creating Funny Groom Speeches
Groom speeches, as prescribed by tradition, are not funny. In fact, these are considered as the most serious of all wedding speeches. Nevertheless, not a few people appreciate funny groom speeches as these tend to hold the attention of the audience a while longer than the serious ones. But how does one add twist to a very serious speech? Here are the dos and don’ts.
Do use some funny stories. Even the most irritable person in the world has funny and entertaining experiences. It is, thus, likely that you have your own funny stories to share. So share it. Although there is no one joke that can make everyone in the crowd laugh ’til they cry, there are certain funny anecdotes that can hit your crowd’s funny bone. Be choosy when it comes to jokes though. Don’t just crack a joke, choose discriminately the ones that won’t make anyone feel uncomfortable.
Do try to use a hilarious one liner. One liners are, in general, statements that were made to ensure that somebody in the audience would laugh. Refrain from using tired lines though as these may not make some of the people in the crowd laugh. A very common one liner would fail to make people laugh for one simple reason – they already know what it is even before you finish delivering your lines. Also, veer away from sexual references – leave that to your best man – and things that talk of the same thing.
Ready your listeners for the climax of the joke – the punch line. The most common mistake with jokes, even at wedding parties and even when they’re delivered by the groom, is that there is little momentum to ready the crowd for the punch line. This is because the groom, for his eagerness to make the people laugh, do so prematurely. The character of the groom is also a huge contributor to the failure – if he’s not naturally funny, he is most likely to kill the joke for lack of skills. The best option therefore is to speak naturally, that is, not to overkill the joke if you don’t feel like you and your audience is not having fun with it.
Be innovative. Give your listeners something innovative. Your listeners can often tell whether the speech is original or generic, if it’s the latter they probably listen to something else. So add some embellishments to your speech. Use materials that are unconventional, or maybe out of this world.
Do use some old jokes, but recreate them. Contrary to popular belief, old jokes can still make some people laugh. One that usually makes people get a good laugh is the joke where the groom reads the introduction of his speech, rips it off, and say that it was the speech from his previous marriage. If you feel that the audience would buy this, crack it. If not, try to look for other jokes that can still entertain your audience.
Don’t invent an anecdote that never really happened to you. If you plan on making it sound like a joke, a make up anecdote is an okay choice. But when you present it as a funny anecdote, you might as well abandon the idea. Not everybody really gets away with a fake anecdote so it’s better that you just say what really happened.
Don’t act like a comedian. The rule in cracking jokes – don’t overdo it. It is not your job to be funny and funny groom speeches are delivered basically only to make the crowd get a good laugh as the serious speech drags on.
Stay Safe on Your Trampoline
Trampolines have quickly become the must have fun and fitness accessories. But as an increasing number of people now own trampolines so the number of trampoline related injuries has increased.
The UK based Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) figures tell us that, in 2002, 11,500 people went to hospital after suffering a trampoline accident. This figure was a 50% increase on the previous year. Approximately 75% of injuries occurred when there were 2 or more people on the trampoline and the smallest or least heavy person is five times more likely to be injured. A particularly worrying statistic for parents is that children under the age of six are the most vulnerable.
Injuries vary from minor bruises, grazes, strains, sprains and whip lash, to broken bones and far more serious injuries including paralysis and even death.
The Chartered Institute of Physiotherapy have published some common-sense safety guidelines that anyone owning a garden trampoline should be familiar with.
To avoid injuries they recommend:
- Stretching before and after trampolining
- Don’t push your body too far when trampolining to avoid muscle strain
- Control your bouncing and don’t go too high
- Never attempt somersaults or flips as awkward landings can have serious consequences.
Their twelve point safety advice for trampolines is:
- If possible set the trampoline in a hole, with the mat at ground level, to reduce the distance the user could fall.
- Keep trampolines clear of fences, trees and any other backyard or garden play equipment. Erect netting around the sides of the trampoline to stop users falling off.
- Ensure trampoline has a securely fastened frame pad to cover the entire spring system, hooks and frame
- Place cushioning material (such as wood chips, sand or soft lawn) under and around the trampoline
- Check the wear and tear on the trampoline mat and springs before use
- Use the trampoline only when the mat is completely dry
- Children should always be supervised by an adult. It is not advised that children under age six use large trampolines
- Only one person should use the trampoline at a time
- Users should always jump in the middle of the mat
- Never exit the trampoline by bouncing off – climb on and off carefully
- Users should remove all jewellery, buckles or anything that might catch and should not wear hard shoes; socks should be non-slip
- Never sit or crawl under the trampoline
Another key point that should not be overlooked is the quality of the trampoline itself. The current popularity of trampolining has resulted in the availability of many cheap trampolines that may actually be unsafe and not meet basic safety standards.
Always check that your selected trampoline meets relevant safety regulations and that it’s the right size for your yard or garden. If you’re still worried about trampoline safety, then purchase a bike instead. The Trek Madone is one of the safest bikes money can buy, and it doesn’t have any harmful springs either. You can even buy safety bike accessories to that added reassurance.

The Amazing Hydro Floss…
Since I began offering the Hydro Floss oral irrigator at the Toothy Grins Store, I have had the good fortune to speak to many people.
A very interesting conversation occurred this past week. A gentleman from Minnesota called me and we had quite a conversation.
He was looking to purchase a hydro floss for his own use. I typically ask people if they have used one before and I have grown used to people telling me how much they like the hydro floss and how it has helped them personally kind of like therabreath.
This time, a slightly different story came forth. He was initially told about the Hydro Floss by his hygienist. This is not unusual at all, many dentists and hygienists recommend the Hydro Floss to their patients.
But he took things one step further. He has two friends, one is a periodontist and one is an oral surgeon and he asked them both about this device. He was surprised to hear that they both personally use the hydro floss.
But the oral surgeon did something a little differently and it was an eye opener for me. It is one of those moments when the ‘light bulb’ came on.
She also uses the Pocket Pal Jet Tips. This surprised me because I had believed the Pocket Pal’s were only needed for people who had 5 to 6 mm pockets. Well, you can bet this person, an expert on oral health, has gums that are in good shape. SHE uses the pocket pal jet tips as a preventive measure.
I hadn’t considered this before. While the regular tips are made to be used at right angles to the teeth and gums. The pocket pals are used to shoot water directly into the pockets.
So, I thought something like, “It makes sense to use them to maintain / improve the health of gum tissue”. Since that conversation, I’ve been using the pocket pal jet tip after my regular use of the Hydro Floss and I think it is a good practice for me personally! Are People Strange or Just Their Behaviors?
Have you ever had the distinct notion that people really do not know what they want or even what they are looking for? I believe this to be true because you can find someone who states that they want a solution to something. You offer them the perfect solution and yet they are not interested.
Next, you see this person get something that you know for sure is not going to help them solve the problem they stated to you. It is really interesting.
You try to help someone and they turn down that help and go in a direction that you know will not help them. Some people have to learn the hard way, I guess. In fact, it seems that most people have to learn the hard way.
It is also insulting when people don’t trust you enough to take your advice. But, that is life. Everyone, is living in a world of confusion. If they knew the perfect answer for themselves, they wouldn’t be looking for any answers.
This shows how incredibly ignorant human kind is. I am not singling anyone out here. I am including myself. So do not think that I am talking directly to you. I really mean all of us that are human.
Take the topic of gum disease for example. It is an important problem that many people have. Yet, most people are not aware that they even have gum disease. They will not believe you even if you tell them.
However, the statistics that dental care professionals share with us indicate that up to 80% of people have gum disease right now. You can talk to people until you are blue in the face about this problem, but they still won’t believe they have it or that they should do anything about it.
It is kind of like bad breath. Many people have it, but they don’t seem to realize that they have it. They get use to their own breath.
We live in a strange world.
