Fishing Tackle Boxes in the UK: A Few Useful Items to Carry

By Article Guy On February 25, 2010 No Comments

As you get ready for the beginning of the fishing season, half the fun is stocking up your tackle box with all the tools you’ll need to catch the big one. Even though you probably won’t forget to take leaders, hooks, line, bobbers, and sinkers, you could fail to pack everything you need, which could spell disaster for your otherwise fun and relaxing venture. Let’s look at the “must have’s” for your fishing trip.

Fishing Tackle Boxes -Needle Nose Pliers

Needle nose pliers are a great addition to any tackle box. Pliers will allow you to quickly take the hooks out of your fish. Be certain to pick a needle nose containing an integrated cutter. A cutter is useful for cutting off the end of a hook before pulling it out of a fish. Needle nose pliers are also terrific for crimping split shot and leaders on your line.

Knife

Select a rugged, versatile knife. I’d recommend a pretty large blade made of stainless steel. A partly serrated blade gives you the most options. Cleaning and preparing the fish is another reason why the blade must be sturdy. Two fine accessories to look for when choosing a knife include a hook remover and a scaler.

File

A file will help keep hooks sharp and, with a bit of practice, keep your knife sharp. You’ll want a little file shaped like a triangle with an varying coarse exteriors on each side. A whetstone is another option, but these are best left to more advanced fisherman.

Toilet Roll

Let’s be honest – when you need it, there’s no substitute. It’s not necessary to take a full roll. Unravel some and stick in inside a waterproof bag. Don’t scrimp on the quantity and consider tucking a few Kleenex or paper towels into your tackle box as well. If you need to construct a fire, these items are terrific kindling.

Fishing Tackle Boxes -Nail Clippers

Most clippers include a file that’s useful for making hooks sharp. Also, the clipper itself is a good way to cut the line.

Lighter

It’s hard to know in advance if you’ll need to create a fire for some reason. Lighters are also handy for melting the ends of a rope to avoid fraying and to fix messed up plastic worms.

Emergency Box

A portable kit that fits inside a pocket is your best option. Be sure it minimally contains bandages, a way to cleanse a wound and antibiotic ointment. An Ace® bandage and gauze pads are a suitable choice. Be sure to carry aspirin or another analgesic as well. Sunscreen is essential as well.

Insect Spray

Nothing can spoil an outdoors outing quite like being annoyed by insects—so make certain to take a good, quality brand of insect spray with you that’s effective against whatever bugs you might expect to find around the water.

Fishing Tackle Boxes -Easily Portable Food

Pack a few energy bars or granola bars. They are nutritious, just as raisins or nuts are.

Once you’re gear is all squared away, you can think about how to catch a nice, big fish!

Discover More About Finding Saltwater Fishing Gear

By Article Guy On February 23, 2010 No Comments

For anglers lucky enough to live close to the coast, getting out on the saltwater and hooking a huge one—whether going after  bonefish, redfish, snapper, or ocean bass—is one of the greatest thrills possible. But, as many women have pointed out, fishing can be the male equivalent of scrapbooking: you can spend as much time and cash wanting for “just the correct” lures,  hooks, rod, reel, or you-name-it as you can spend time actually putting the line in the water! Admittedly, the look for the elusive  “perfect setup” could be a terribly real part of the enjoyment of fishing, but why spend oodles of effort and time trolling the aisles at your  local retailers for saltwater fishing gear when you could be oyut there trolling the estuaries and lagoons, or surf-casting for jack or  roosterfish?

What Do I Require?

If you’re a true saltwater novice, you need to understand that saltwater fishing gear is usually heavier than freshwater equipment and  is also made of materials that resist the corrosion so common in environments that combine moist air and high saline content.  Even saltwater fly fishing gear is heavier than the tackle favored by the blokes angling for rainbows in those high mountain  streams. Additionally, rods vary depending on the kind of saltwater fishing: surfcasting rods are totally different than a boat rod you’d use to  bottom fish from a pontoon or pier; Deepwater trolling rods are vastly different than saltwater flyfishing rods. And, like any  alternative sort of fishing, you need to decide on your line based on what you are going after: for ladyfish and other smaller inshore  species, you don’t need twenty-pound test line! In fact, if you know what you’re doing, you can catch a lot of fish on smaller line.

Take Care of Your Stuff

As implied by its requirement for corrosion resistance, your saltwater fishing gear ought to be frequently cleaned and maintained for  maximum life and least amount of down time. Every time you employ your saltwater fishing gear, you ought to straight away clean everything with  soapy water and a soft brush—nothing else can take away dried salt. Clean all the eyes on the rod, and suspend everything vertically to  dry. Use sparing amounts of a good quality reel lubricant to keep the reel in top operating condition and to extend its life. But  be careful to not use an excessive amount of lubricant-fish hate the scent of oil!

Spend Your Money Wisely

Typically, spending the most cash on a rod does not invariably ensure obtaining the top deal. With reels, on the other hand, the  higher investment can pay real dividends, since more high-priced reels usually are constructed with real bearings instead of  plastic shims. Bearings will last longer and offer smoother operation throughout the lifetime of the equipment, while the less  expensively constructed reels can begin to wear and drag sooner.

Latest Winter Sport – Snowbiking

By Article Guy On February 23, 2010 No Comments

It has been waiting in the background, slowly growing in popularity and support, and now it is ready to be unveiled on the world properly. The sport of snowbiking takes place on a normal piste and involves traveling down the mountainside on a modified push-bike. Chucking yourself down a ski run on a bike is nothing new, but the hundreds of people who tried it previously didn’t do too well on account of the fact bicycles rely heavily on good ground friction. For many years ski and snowboard fans have been working on advancing designs in the hope of developing something that worked. Sadly, many of the earlier models were bulky and difficult to steer, and it has only been in the last few seasons that a snowbike has been developed that really works.

A Canadian firm currently offers the best bike on the market and they have announced the first snowbike world championship will take place next year. Rather than being built for tricks or jumps, snowbikes are normally purpose-built for control and carving ability. This will be reflected in the world championship events that will be based around slalom and speed competitions. The large majority of snowbikes that have succeeded in the market share many characteristics with snowmobiles. They maintain a lower centre of gravity and are steered using a bladed mounted to the front which can dig into the snow to change direction. This gives the rider much better steering control, but only one blade is needed as snowbikes are a lot lighter and do not travel as fast as snowmobiles.

Snowbike manufactures admit that snowbiking is not the easiest of extreme sports to master, but that it is well worth putting in the hours to master. Apparently learning how to snowbike shares similarities with learning to ride normal mountain bikes. The learning curve is pretty steep, but when you got the hours of practice under your belt, its not something that you’ll ever forgot how to do.Now that adult snowbikes have proved a success, women’s and children’s snowbikes are starting to be manufactured. There are also multiple extras now, such as stabilisers, headlights and even horns.

There will be a temptation for many proficient snowboarders and skiers to tackle the hardest runs straight away, but manufacturers urge people to start of small and build up, no matter how good you think you will be. Snowbikes are much harder to stop than snowboards or skis, and if you haven’t mastered the technique you will not only be risking your own safety, but you may be endangering the safety of other winter sports enthusiasts also.

Certain American ski resorts in fact have prohibited snowbikers on their slopes until more is known about the safety of the things. The majority of locations however are understanding to snowbikers, but still suggest that everyone is careful until we know just how safe they are. Despite the mild controversy surrounding the sport, it doesn’t seem to be putting people off giving it a go, and there are now a predicted 40,000 snowbikers in the USA alone.
